Do you let debris collect on the substrate?

  • Do you let debris collect on the substrate naturally and just let the fish move it around (until it gets to an excessive amount)? Or do you try to keep your substrate layer super clean at all times?

I feel like the natural look of where debris land is nice (unless it’s all poop which makes me just readjust my filters to avoid that), but debris like leaves or pieces of wood/small rocks are fine to me.

  • It depends - if it’s like wood from driftwood or leaves from any plants, I’ll tend to leave it. Over time most poop and excess food tends to be mixed by snails (unless I have like gravel in which case I’ll just gravel vacuum it after a week or two of collecting).
