Mollies are quite adaptable and can live in freshwater, brackish, or saltwater setups. When it comes to feeding a molly in a saltwater tank, both tropical flake and marine flake foods can work, but there are some things to consider to help keep your molly healthy and vibrant.
Marine flake foods are typically higher in certain nutrients like marine proteins and may contain spirulina or seaweed, which can benefit fish living in saltwater. Mollies are omnivorous, so they enjoy a diet that includes both plant material and animal protein. If you choose marine flakes, look for varieties that have a good balance of algae or spirulina along with fish protein.
Tropical flakes are also acceptable if that's what you have on hand, but try to supplement the diet with veggie-based foods. You can occasionally offer blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach, or spirulina-based pellets and flakes.
Regardless of flake choice, variety is key. Mixing in frozen foods like brine shrimp or daphnia once or twice a week offers enrichment and extra nutrition. Keep feeding portions small to avoid excess waste, especially in a tank that’s still establishing its biological filter. This approach will help your molly thrive during and after the cycling process.
