What is your preferred substrate depth?

Since everyone has their own personal opinion on how much substrate they like, if they want it level or at a grade around the tank, and other aspects. What is your preferred substrate depth and does it vary from substrate type (ex; gravel/sand/soil/etc.)?

What cheap sand substrate do you use?

I’d probably say 2-3” max, unless if I had any type of burying fish or invertebrates and then I may make it anywhere from 3-5” just have it at an odd gradient throughout the tank.
