Do you use an air pump?

Since the only reason for having an air pump seems to be to add more water surface movement, do you use one or do you just have your filters pointing upwards to make sure that the water surface is always moving instead?

I personally hate the look that the bubbles give, and it also creates for a nice limestone/calcium build up (due to my extremely hard water) so I try to avoid them at all costs. I currently just have my canister filter spray bars pointed upward, or use a HOB filter or two in order to get the good surface movement needed for the gas exchange.
