I’ve seen a bunch of fish stores start to carry these plastic shields that go around your heater, to prevent turtles, bigger fish, and others from resting on or directly near the heat and burning themselves. Have you used any of these or tried one out yet? Curious on the results people have in terms of the heater heating correctly still and the reaction from fish (do they think it’s a hidden area to hide in or avoid it completely).

I’d for sure say that a heater, water conditioner, lighting, a stand and lid would be must haves.

Air pump can be iffey if you have your filters creating the surface movement, substrate can be not needed for bare bottom tanks, and bucket/algae scrapper and fish nets tend to be nice to haves if you do water changes or want to move the fish around sometimes.

I mostly go with the glass lids for that sleek look, and to be able to just place a LED light on top of the lid vs. having a hidden hood in order to have it hanging at the right height.

I’d say that going for what you want will help out a bunch. There are plant specific lights for growing plants, and then there are those enhancing lights that you can adjust with an app to make your fish colorations stand out even more.

I’d for sure prefer guppies, although for whatever reason I’ve always had poor luck in keeping them for longer than a few months. Not sure if it’s just my water being too off of their requirements, or if I’m just getting some extremely poor quality fish from my local store.

My favorite school and shoaling fish would have to be neon tetras. When they are in big numbers of >20-30, they just look amazing in the tank especially if you can make them all rush and group up together.

I think many spend a bunch of time of substrate since it’s something that you will always see, it really can affect the species you can have, and it can set the kind of theme or style one would decorate with.

I don’t think it matters for Ich mostly, but ideally you would want to mix your sand around from the bottom of the tank upwards at least twice a month to avoid gas pockets from forming (and the sand turning from whatever color to black which is a pocket of ammonia).

If the fish are fed correctly and have a rich diet, I’d think they could make it about a week. I’d agree with buying an aromatic feeder and setting it to run every other day vs. every day to increase the length it will work.

Do you know what type of algae it is? Have you tried to feed less, or try to control any external lights like from a window in the room from directly showing into the tank?

I think it depends on the crab, to be honest since many are brackish and a few are actually freshwater. Do you know the exact species you have?

Did you wash the carbon bags that came with the filter first? Normally those are covered in small particles or carbon which makes the tank super white and cloudy for a day or two before it clears up on its own.
