I've noticed a huge difference in water clarity and nutrient levels since I started using one in my setup. By removing dissolved organic compounds before they break down, it really limits the build-up of nitrates and phosphates. That means less algae and a healthier environment for sensitive corals and fish.
For me, the biggest technical point is adjustment. Just tuning the water level and airflow can change how much gunk it pulls out. I check the collection cup almost daily and it's amazing how much waste gets removed. You still need a good filter and regular water changes, but this piece of equipment definitely feels essential for keeping parameters stable, especially in a stocked reef tank.
