When checking the size of tanks using the calculator on the footer, I noticed that for a bunch there are over estimates of the tank size when using dimensions that are from like a 20 gallon or even 40 gallon breeder tank.

Are you making sure you are measuring the inside of the tank and not the outside? The dimensions on most boxes show the outside for shipping information, however the inside is different and where the true volume is stemmed from.
