Are the filters in saltwater and freshwater aquariums the same?

They are roughly the same. Usually, with salt water tanks, you will require larger filters for the same amount of water as a freshwater setup. Certain filters are marketed for salt water tanks specifically. It depends on what you are keeping in the tank really.
