Minimalist Aquascape approach vs. Showcase approach

When it comes down to making sure that your substrate and tanks are designed as cleanly as possible, do you tend to go with tank designs that allow for you to be more minimalistic and have just rock and substrate with a lot more swimming/open space - or do you tend to go all out and make sure that everything is decorated like a reef would be where there isn't too much open space or free room?
