Is your refugium in the same tank as your sump or fully separated out?

Like the title says, is your refugium in a different tank completely than your sump, or are they in the same tank divided out?

I tend to find that tanks that are setup in a more professional way tend to have them together - and more DIY or starter tanks tend to have it separated so one can learn what they do or if they are required.
