What do you specifically feed your corals?

  • There are many that are looking for a comprehensive coral food, where people can also dose at any specific rates to keep their reef happy. What do you particularly like in a product that can stay useable in a dosing container for at least a month, and what specific product do you use in order to make sure that this can be done?

  • When selecting a food for corals that can be dosed automatically and remain stable in a container for a month, several criteria must be considered. Firstly, the formulation needs to be fine enough to avoid clumping or separation, as this can lead to inconsistent dosing and possible nutrient imbalances. I prioritize products that have been specifically designed for use with auto-dosers and are marketed as stable suspensions. Powder-type foods tend to settle or clump, especially if humidity works its way into the container, so I lean toward liquid suspensions that remain homogeneous with gentle agitation.

Personally, I have found success with amino acid blends and certain broadcast coral foods that are labeled for long-term dosing use. These are typically preserved to prevent spoilage, which is essential for maintaining the food’s nutritional value and preventing fouling in the tank. I also check for minimal phosphate and nitrate content to avoid excess algae growth.

Another important factor is the spectrum of nutrients—ideally, the food offers a mix of dissolved and particulate components to suit a variety of coral types, especially if your reef includes both SPS and LPS. Ultimately, the best product is one that meets the nutritional needs of your specific coral mix while remaining stable and safe over time in your dosing reservoir.
