I probably clean mine once a week when I do my water changes. Use a gravel vac even with sand to get the debris that is just on the surface of the substrate.

What type of substrates are good for planted tanks..I’m trying to avoid regular gravel or sand since you have to dose with fertilizers or use root tabs - thanks!
