What is your go to method to trim any plants that might be either dying from lack of light (due to themselves) or getting a tad crazy inside of the tank? Do you use scissors, pull the plant by hand, or something else?

Why do they put wood chips in the dirt?
A lot of soil actually has wood chips, fertilizers, or other things like sand in it to make sure that the water can run down the soil and underneath the plant. In an aquarium tank, these aren’t needed and will float up to the top over time which can ruin someone’s layout if they had already planted plants in.

I’ve used foam (like foam from an arts and crafts store), glue, silicones, egg crate, even sometimes metal mesh that was coated in cement that then was coated in silicone heavily,
I think as long as you know what you want inside of the tank, and know their habits (etc. will they try to dig into my aquascape, or pull at it, or run into it) you can build something that can stand up to their requirements and more.

I’m not sure if they have an article in the works (since I know that they noted saltwater and freshwater would be completed before brackish), but might make sense to pull one together since it should be a mixture of both already there.
Maybe Avery could answer better on that.

I think it depends, I’ve seen a handful of aquarium/aquatic safe superglue, but the issue becomes when you use normal superglue it actually will just dissolves over time in the water in chunks. I’d be super careful on what type of superglue are that point, and just use silicone since it dries clear and has the same adhesive aspect that superglue has but is aquarium and aquatic life save.

By natural filter do you mean possibly having a sand bed, with live rock and something that would take care of ammonia/nitrites/nitrates? Would have a water pump running to move the water around count as a filter in this setup or no?

I’ve mostly just used silicone tubing, that is a off-clear color to make sure I can see whenever I may need to clean the tubes out (and also to allow for me to bend them as needed in whatever direction).

I was ironically going to reply to here regarding them changing it at least in my market. I was hoping it isn’t a permanent change but guessing by the new marketing changing online even I sadly think it’s going to be this way going forward from now on.

I know that there are a bunch of plants that can live in saltwater, and many so just fine inside of sumps, but I’m curious on if any of you have gotten some to grow nicely inside of your main tank. How is your luck with them in the main tank, any pro/cons?

Have any of you that own any RCS focused on breeding these, or have you just let them of their own thing? I’ve seen a bunch for sale with a higher grade (coloration really) that peeked my interest into getting a small group and then selling any of those that I would need to cull for cheap - just curious on how long before you may see a grade “increase” in terms of colors if you start with the lowest (cheapest) bunch.

That’s a good question, I normally just tell them to not run around or tap on the tank. If it’s like night time, I just tell them to not turn the lights on. Most honestly respect that, although with reptiles it can get hard since some hear or feel movement/vibrations, so anything out of the normal can spook them pretty badly.

I’ve seen some pretty cool restaurants have giant tanks, like the rainforest cafe that was shown in that TV show “Tanked”. Otherwise it tends to be smaller tanks for show like in Chinese food places or at spas to make you feel relaxed.

I think there are far better plants that can be fully submerged that should be used, but I’ve seen plenty of tanks use them for aquascape reasons or because you can slowly bend the plant itself into unique shapes which look pretty cool.

I normally tend to use those that are both floating liquid filled ones AND digital, to make sure that they are within the same range since I’ve seen digital ones out of skew pretty badly.

I think that depends by most algae, most common algae in tanks are green and brown algae which many algae diet fish and invertebrates would eat. Snails are a good option, or even smaller algae eating fish like otocinlus catfish (Otos), cory catfish if it’s all only the bottom of the tank and not on the glass walls, or some Plecos that are small or other fish like mollies.

What about a plecostomus? Is there anyone out there that uses those?
I’ve have a few, I think the biggest problem is that many tanks are just too small for their adult size, unless you get one of the smaller breeds (which still get around 6-8 inches long).

Honestly that is probably the smartest thing I haven’t done to my tank stand. I always use a flash light when I could of had both hands free the whole time. Thank you for the quick tip!
