Goldfish are cool fish but they are so messy that I have not kept any in over 15 years. I just don't want to deal with it. They also need much larger tanks than people realize. One fish needs a minimum of 20 gallons. I don't know why people think they can keep them in 5-gallon tanks, or even less like a fishbowl!

I have never kept clams in general. I have heard of people doing clam-only tanks online but I have never known anyone personally who has done it. I would imagine you set everything up with the best interest of the clams.

Yes, I wash everything before putting it in the tank. Most bags will tell you to rinse until the water runs clear. Even soil and sand are recommended a few rinses before putting it in a tank with fish or plants.

I used to feed my fish in the AM when I woke up and in the PM before I went to bed but they were being overfed. I cut back to only feeding them at night and I believe they prefer that seeing as the Shrimp like to come out when the light goes off as well.

No, they don't. While most will eat anything they will not thrive. It is best to supplement any food with different types of treats such as bloodworms.

An outdoor fish tank? I have never heard of such a thing.
I would imagine you would want to clean it more often as it is more likely to develop algae and bacteria being outdoors. So whatever is recommended for the size of tank you have, do it twice as often as that.

Sand is best cleaned at least once a month but it depends on the size of the tank and considering you just had a case of ich, I would be doing it weekly for a while.

I have only used bubble filters that go under the substrate. I have never used the ones that filter water. It seems like it would be fine for specific tanks with less messy fish but I would imagine it doesn't clean as well.

A lot of times when you set up a tank fresh, it will be cloudy anywhere from 6 to 48 hours. I have had this happen a number of times and usually, it is nothing the worry about. Even after using soil substrate and not being able to see anything, it cleared in 12 hours.

The most common is just dyed gravel. You can see this in all pet stores. I am not sure what the proper name of it is, as to what it is made of. I prefer pebble and smooth stone natural substrate myself. They come in all sizes and they don't contain dyes or sealants.

The one tip I always give people is the smaller the tank, the more often in needs to be cleaned. I would say that in most cases, a 5 gal tank should be cleaned every other week unless you have just shrimp or snails, then once a month is fine.
In some cases, you may need to do it weekly depending on the fish.

I saw someone talking about these on their video recently. I can't remember who it was or I would link it. She was using a USB-powered air pump for her 20 gallon tank since she didn't want a filter going. She was keeping newts in it. Has anyone ever used one of these?
-
I have not used a stand-alone air pump in a long time. I have one I never used. I bought it for making a micro tank for my beta when the main filter broke but just ended up getting a new tank that came with a new filter.
-
I don't think you need an air pump if you have a filter but I guess this really depends on the fish. Some fish do better when there is air flowing within the water while others prefer not to have this.

I would imagine these don't last very long. Anything that I have had run on batteries that has to go 24/7, usually dies within a few days. It seems silly to use something like this IMO.

A friend of mine was telling me that his boss has a 20 gal tank in hit office with 3 goldfish in it. He doesn't have anything on the bottom of the tank, it is just glass and there is a bubbler in it as well. I asked if he had any decorations or anything like that and he said only a few large marbles that apparently the goldfish play with.

Well, I know for most fish 96.6 is WAY too high of a temp for them. Most will top out at 88. Maybe your heater is broken? I would unplug that for a while or switch that off for starts. You can add ice cubes to the tank to cool the temp down faster as well. Just don't use too many and be sure to use clean water to make them.

Some fish do act silly. I think certain ones actually end up having their own personalities which have always fascinated me. I don't have a question right now but I will come back to this thread if I think of something!

I have a built-in LED light on the hood of my small tank and it is pretty bright. I think it can be bothersome for the shrimp as they hardly come out until it is off.
Is there some way I can safely dim it a bit? I thought of using some sort of water-proof paint or something.
