How can you tell if a coral is dead?

I have a friend who has a coral that hasn’t opened up for a week so far, and we’re both worried it’s dead. It still has color on the outside of where it opens up, but not sure if it’s just in a state of shock or if it’s gone already. Any advice?

Does it like smell like how a dead snail would be chance? Like that rotting color? I don’t have any photos but I’m sure I can ask him for some.
