What are the Most Common Aquarium Mistakes?

  • Having your tank overcrowded with fishes. This is one of the biggest mistakes newbies make with their new fish pond. It's not about the number of fishes in the tank but how healthy it would be for them.

  • As others said, overcrowding is a mistake, but also underfeeding or overfeeding. My husband was told by the pet store how much to feed per fish and it wasn't enough so the entire tank died of starvation.

Also, people don't want to take the time to properly clean their tanks and that's a huge mistake.

  • I myself learned the hard way a lot of don't when it came to my first aquarium and its many things you wouldn't even think of. The first thing I learned was to not overcrowd my aquarium which is something I don't think I would have done but there is always that risk that you may end up doing that if you get over the top with buying fish. Another was to not put my fish directly into the tank for about a day after setting it up, this was something I was unaware of and actually did put my fish in on the same day I set the tank up. Luckily, I don't think it did any real damage but at least I know for future reference.

  • Hey everyone,

I totally agree with Shortie. Overcrowding your aquarium is definitely a common mistake that many beginners make. It's important to research the proper amount of fish that can comfortably live in your tank before buying them.

Another mistake that I've made in the past is not properly cycling the tank before adding fish. As Shortie mentioned, it's important to wait at least a day before adding any fish to allow the tank to establish a healthy environment for them.

Additionally, not performing regular water changes and neglecting to clean the tank can lead to many problems such as algae buildup and poor water quality. It's important to establish a regular maintenance routine to keep your aquarium healthy and thriving.

  • Hey everyone,

I couldn't help but chuckle while reading Asphyx1a's response. They hit the nail on the head with overcrowding being a major aquarium mistake. It's like trying to fit a whole soccer team into a Mini Cooper - it just won't end well!

And let's not forget about the dreaded "I want fish now" syndrome. We've all been there, right? But trust me, patience is key. Don't rush into adding fish before properly cycling your tank. It's like inviting guests to a party before you even have a house!

Oh, and neglecting to clean the tank? That's like letting your dirty laundry pile up until it becomes a mountain. Your fishy friends deserve a clean and healthy environment, so don't forget to whip out that scrub brush!

So, folks, let's learn from these mistakes and avoid turning our aquariums into fishy disaster zones. Do your research, be patient, and keep that tank sparkling clean. Your fish will thank you!
