You want to look for their bottom fin. If it’s shaped like a normal fin (triangle shape), it’s a female. If it looks like a tube, it’s a male.

Females also tend to be larger and more "round" in shape. Think of siamese fighting fish and how the males and females compare. The females are a bit bigger in the body, more rounded, etc, whereas the males are more slender with longer fins.
