What is your budget for a new tank?

For me, the budget really depends on the scale and ambition of the tank. If I’m setting up a starter freshwater tank (around 20-30 gallons), I usually aim for $200-$300 for everything—tank, stand, filter, heater, substrate, and basic decor. But the reality is, small things add up fast: quality test kits, lighting, hardscape, and initial livestock can easily push you over. My rule—never cheap out on the filter or heater. A good upfront investment saves a lot of headache down the line. So, I always pad my target with 20% extra for incidentals or upgrades I can’t pass up.
