    • We have added a Shoutbox (which can be viewed in the footer) for everyone to discuss in real-time, or with a delay on any important items.
    • We have added a new Points Of Interest system that will contain all locations of local fish stores, big-box aquarium stores, and breeders. We're slowly adding them over time across the United States - and then will start adding locations around the world! Starting today, September 24th from 1 AM EST until 2 AM EST, there may be some downtime (pages either not rendering correctly or loading at all) while we perform a migration from our current hosting server to a dedicated hosting server. This will solve all of the issues when it comes to the unexpected outages we have been seeing for the past week from 2 AM EST - 6 AM EST, increase the speed at which our website loads for all visitors, and also improve responsiveness when it comes to uploading attachments/images.

Please be patient with us as some of the changes will require us to move over the domain name to the new IP address, which for some users, may take anywhere between a few minutes up to 48 hours at worst. If you still are unable to access Aquariu.ms after this window, please reach out to us via our social media channels.

Thank you for being patient while we sorted out this problem, and while we perform the necessary migration to prevent this from occurring again.

In this guide we will attempt to outline some basics of taking photographs and/or videos, using different techniques that are available, how to focus on getting that specific look/vibe you want to capture, and some important things to remember when photographing through glass or when working with a scene that has distinct highlights and shadows. This can be highly beneficial in order for you to capture good looking images to be used for your tank journals, or to be able to share across what the tank looks like in actual lighting.

How to Get the Exposure Right

You’ll need to keep an eye on exposure settings so you can avoid underexposure. The light is weak, and your options for shutter speed and aperture are limited, so you’ll be pushing up towards a very high ISO. That’s because it’s better to suffer a little noise than a blurry picture.

Using either full manual mode or shutter priority on your camera. Your exposure time will depend on how quickly the fish, etc. is moving. For creatures that move slowly, a time between 1/25 and 1/80 will usually do. For quickly swimming fish, you need to shorten it to the range from 1/100 to 1/250, or sometimes even shorter.

Handling That Low Depth of Field

The lack of light limits your choice of aperture. Aquariums are usually lighted for viewing with your eyes, not your camera. Even with the high ISO and long exposures I’m recommending, you’ll end up using an aperture from f/2.8 to f/5.6, and that means a low depth of field. You’ll have to work with that creatively. You’ll need to choose precisely what will and won’t be sharp in your photos.

When photographing a fish at a low depth of field, the fish’s orientation relative to the lens also plays a role. For example if the fish is facing the lens, then only its head will be sharp. It’s best to photograph a fish from the side; then all of it will be sharp.

For slow creatures such as these beautiful snails, use a longer exposure and set the aperture to f/8 and get more depth of field; in macro photography, this is important.

    What About the Reflections?

Another frequent complication in aquarium photography is that aquarium glass reflects nearly everything around it, filling photos with unwanted reflections of the photographer, passersby, and everything shiny in the room. This problem, too, has a simple solution - an anti-reflection shield. Either buy one of these special rubber lens shields, or make a tube out of black cardboard or hard fabric and place it over the lens. Press the edge of the anti-reflection shield up against the glass of the aquarium to shield away reflections.

Using a shield has one disadvantage: with the lens up against the aquarium glass like this, you can’t focus on objects that are right next to it. But this is a fair trade for a reflection-free photo.

The last stumbling block is that you’re working with multiple optical environments - air, glass, and water. Light rays are refracted at various angles at the boundaries between each of these environments. This can cause distortion and optical defects. To suppress these negative effects, you have to always hold the lens perpendicular to the glass and to the object in the aquarium. Otherwise the photo will not be sharp due to light refraction, and chromatic aberration (a blue-violet aura) will appear around objects.

What if the Aquarium Glass Is Damaged or Dirty?

Aquarium glass isn’t always clean, and you need to take that into account. Ideally you should always take a cloth and some cleaner with you to clean dirty glass. With their help, you can often even clean away fingerprints. You might get some funny looks, but it’s worth it for a perfect photo.

But the glass may also be scratched, or seaweed may be growing on it from the inside, and sometimes you can’t influence that. Here the solution is to not focus on things that are right up against the glass. If you’re focusing about halfway into the aquarium, then the defects in the glass won’t be within your depth of field, and so they won’t be visible.

Due to the overwhelming nature of these 50% Off Sale (formerly known as the Dollar Per Gallon sale) events that Petco has been putting together, we have decided that it would be smart to condense all of the possible dates into one section for a future reference on when they may appear. Although many other retailers have adopted such a sale (they may call it something else), this is when nationwide almost all Petco stores (excluding Alaska and Hawaii) have this sale going on. Normally during the middle of this sale, they will have an aquatic event, where many of their fish, plant, and decorations will also go on a massive discount for days.

    Information

Currently, the only tank sizes that are being sold during this event for the sales price include the 10 gallons, 20 gallons, 29 gallons, while the larger tanks ranging from 40 gallons breeder, 55 gallons, 75 gallons, and 90 gallons are 50% during the sale. Instead of all tanks costing $1/gal as they previously were during the old sale event name, it has been rebranded to be the "50% off sale" where all tanks are now 50% of their original price.

In the past, these sales were supplied by Tetra, however, due to customer complaints, these sales moved over back to Aqueon (who was the original supplier when Petco had this sale event idea). These sales do not include any kits, and therefore the tanks that are the sales price will not include anything extra besides just the tank. Sadly due to location-wise, Hawaii and Alaska are excluded from these sales due to the shipping cost required to make it to these states.

In more recent years it appears that other major retailers including Petsmart are also incorporating this sale event into their marketing for Aqueon, and sometimes their own branded tanks as well. This may or may not be due to the fact of many of these retailers have a price match guarantee, in which they will match the price of an item if it is the same brand and same size (and due to how popular Aqueon brand tanks are, they are forced to follow their policies). Check with your local retailer to see if they have such a guarantee since it is a great way to score one of these tanks if a Petco is not located near where you live.

As of February 28, 2021, Petco has changed the marketing material to state that this is now a 50% sale vs. $1/gal for all of the Aqueon open-top tanks. They also have included more than just the standard Aqueon tanks, and now include some frameless, rimless, and edglit tanks.

For us to better help not only understand your problem that you are encountering, please give all relevant information possible. Sometimes information as simple as knowing what browser are you using can, in many cases it can lead us to a full solution for your issue(s).

Please include information that would help understand your situation such as:

    • What exactly are you trying to do?
    • What is the expected result of what you are trying to do?
    • What browser are you using (version information would be helpful as well, if possible)
    • Do you have any screenshots to show what the issue is (include all screenshots as an attachment)?
    • Is the software reporting any errors to you (as a popup or the full page)?

With all of the following information above, it makes it extremely clear on what you are trying to do and any possible issues that are preventing this. In many situations providing a screenshot when asking a question on how to use a certain feature is not required, but if you are getting any error messages then it will be highly beneficial.

Please do not use this section for the following:

    • Any question, problem, or issue that is not relating to Aquariu.ms (anything that is not on this site is not a support problem).
    • Any issues between members (messages sent between, out of site issues, etc.).

We appreciate your cooperation, and hope that we can resolve any issue you may be experiencing rapidly!

Welcome to Aquariu.ms! We recently just installed a brand new set of website, article, and forum software which will power our next-generation platform. We thought extremely hard about all of the content that had to be shifted, posts/topics that had to be lost, and the familiar website feel that we had before - but this change provides a ton of new features that we couldn't say turn away. Plus, all of the new change allows for better management in terms of the way things were stored (as beforehand everything was mixed into folders, or attachments of photos were shared for content when they can now be uploaded to our Gallery).

    The following (limited and not all examples) are now a huge possibility that we couldn't have done before but now can;

    1. Users now can sign in without having to register an account if they use a social media account (this saves a huge step that seemed to be more of an annoyance than anything).
    2. Increased notifications, better communication between members who register on the forum system, and enhanced searching (specifically, searching for terms through articles or pages that are published).
    3. Extremely fast load times with extremely small page sizes (we now only load exactly what you need based on your device type - if we can detect it) along with better responsive design to allow for it to adjust correctly for all screen sizes and resolutions.
    4. We now have a Gallery where users can upload and share all of the aquarium-related photographs that they take with the rest of the world without any restrictions on who can see them.
    5. Additional enhancements that are behind the scenes (but will largely prevent spammers from being able to access the forum and post irrelevant links).
    6. Enhanced sharing of information will allow for easier access to be able to share important information across multiple websites, forums, or social media networks.
    7. Enhanced profiles for members to be able to have their own full profile (similar to social media accounts in many senses).

Please feel free to register an account (it takes only a matter of minutes) to unlock the full potential of the forums, allowing you to be able to join in conversations with others, ask questions, and even answer some questions that others may have. Aren't too sure if you want to directly register or share your email address? We officially support the use of Tapatalk (search for us under "Aquariu.ms") and we also support the use of using just your social media account to avoid sharing those details across. Still not interested in joining? No worries - we will always leave all our forums available to guests to read, search through the articles we have, and be able to use Aquariu.ms with no limitations (minus the extra features of being to create posts, topics, and share additional content that is).

Registered an account and have some questions on using Aquariu.ms? Feel free to ask in our Support forum where we can answer any website-related issue or experience you may be having and allow you to enjoy the HUGE benefit of having an account with us.

We hope that you'll take the dive in, and join the brand new Aquariu.ms community!
